The Blacksmith Shop

the blacksmith's shop with a cut-out horse in front

The building which houses the Blacksmith Shop is well over 100 years old but little is known about its history. It was not originally used as a blacksmith shop but it is being developed by the Museum as a working forge. The building was widened early in the 20th century giving the roof its present shape. Over the years the building has housed many things including horses, carriages, chickens and tractors. Note the ship's knees framing the door and the way the original beams have been cut to gain a little more height just inside the door, to accommodate a carriage or tractor cab. There are occasional demonstrations at the forge.
