(Update: Cancelled) Winter Solstice at The Farm

December 21, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm

You’re invited to spend the solstice with us! The Winter Solstice (Dec. 21) is the first day of winter, and the shortest day of the year. Every day following the solstice the days start to get longer, so it also heralds the return of the sun, and that’s worth celebrating!

Join us for our 2023 solstice celebration on December 21st with Astronomer and Co-Author of “Mi’kmaw Moons” David Chapman, and Wildlife Illustrator and Author Jeff Domm!

Beginning at 4:00pm, join David Chapman around the bonfire to learn about the Mi’kmaw Moons project – a two-eyed seeing approach combining astronomy and indigenous tradition to interpret the solstice and the changing seasons here in Mi’kma’ki. Take in a reading of “The Chief Moon” – one the stories from “Mi’kmaw Moons” written by David Chapman and Cathy LeBlanc.

Following our guest speaker presentation, join the CHHF staff on a short nature walk on-site to observe the sunset. Visit our new outdoor classroom and wetland interpretation space, and add some natural, wildlife-friendly decorations on our spruce “Christmas” tree.

We will return to the farmyard at approximately 5:00pm. Grab a warm drink from the Tearoom’s take-out window and enjoy it by the fire, or come inside for a greeting card making activity.

Join Jeff Domm inside the Rose & Kettle Tearoom to learn how to illustrate wildlife to be used as artwork for holiday greeting cards. All card making supplies will be provided. Have a look at some of Jeff’s published work, or even purchase your own signed copy of his latest introductory field guide “My First East Coast Bird Book”.

The CHHF Gift Shop will be open during the event for any of your last-minute local gift needs!

The event will conclude between 6:00-6:30pm.
